Why Volunteer at New Beginnings?
New Beginnings Thrift Store has been a cornerstone of the Crete community since 1985. Our volunteers are the heart of everything we do — from sorting donations and stocking shelves to assisting shoppers and supporting local relief efforts.
Whether you have a few hours a week or want to commit to a regular schedule, there is a meaningful role for you here. All volunteers receive training, support, and the satisfaction of knowing their time directly funds local programs.

Apply to Volunteer
Complete the volunteer application form by contacting us at thru our contact form or calling (402) 826-2332. Tell us about your availability and any skills or interests you'd like to contribute.
Attend Orientation
All new volunteers must complete a one-time orientation session before their first shift. Orientation covers store layout, safety procedures, your role, and how to interact with customers and donors.
Complete Volunteer Agreement
Sign the volunteer agreement form acknowledging store policies, confidentiality expectations, and safety guidelines. This form is completed during or after orientation.
Schedule Your Shifts
Work with your supervisor to schedule regular or one-time shifts that fit your availability. Store hours are Monday–Thursday 9 AM–5 PM and Friday–Saturday 9 AM–7 PM.
Check In & Get Started
On your first shift, check in with the volunteer coordinator at the front desk. You will be introduced to your area, paired with an experienced volunteer if needed, and given your tasks for the day.
Log Your Hours
Record your volunteer hours in the sign-in sheet at the front desk at the start and end of every shift. Accurate records help us track community impact and recognize dedicated volunteers.

Store Layout Overview
New Beginnings spans three floors. The main floor features clothing, shoes, and accessories. The second floor carries home goods, books, and small appliances. The third floor is our seasonal Holiday Shop. Donation drop-off is located at the rear entrance.
Volunteer Roles & Areas
Common volunteer roles include: Donation Sorter (receiving and categorizing incoming donations), Floor Associate (stocking, organizing, and assisting shoppers), Cashier Support (bagging and assisting at checkout), and Disaster Relief Support (preparing household item packages for families in crisis).
Safety & Emergency Procedures
Fire exits are located at the front entrance and rear donation door. In case of emergency, alert a supervisor immediately and follow posted evacuation routes. First aid kits are located at the front desk and in the break room. Do not attempt to lift items over 30 lbs without assistance.
Serving Disaster & DV Clients
Some of our most important work involves providing free household and personal items to families affected by disasters or domestic violence. When assisting these clients, treat every interaction with dignity, compassion, and complete confidentiality. A supervisor will always be present to guide you.
